How to use the Marking Assistant
A quick guide for new users
1
Set up your class list
Go to Manage Class Lists from the welcome screen to create or upload your teaching groups. Once set up, use New Candidate to pick a student from the list — name and candidate number fill in automatically.
2
Fill in the candidate details
Enter the candidate name and number in the fields at the top. Click Edit to unlock and fill in centre name, number, scenario title, session and year. These are saved automatically for your next session.
3
Read the mark band descriptors
Each criterion shows the full mark scheme text in three columns — MB1, MB2 and MB3. Read across the columns to decide which band best describes the candidate's work for each strand.
4
Click a mark number
Click the mark number that best reflects the candidate's achievement for that strand. The column highlights in the band colour. If a criterion has more than one strand, complete each one — the tool will suggest an overall mark by averaging across strands.
5
Review the suggested comment
A suggested comment is generated from your strand selections. You can edit the comment directly in the text box, or add a free-text note which will be appended to the comment.
6
Override if needed
The suggested mark can be overridden by clicking any mark number in the row below the comment box. You can also add a free-text additional note which will be appended to the comment.
7
Enter page number(s) and confirm
Type the portfolio page number(s) where evidence can be found, then click the ✓ tick button. This reveals the next criterion.
8
Populate the mark sheet
Once all criteria are complete, the Populate & Download panel appears. Click the button to generate a completed, highlighted mark sheet automatically — no template upload needed.
9
Use the Comment Bank
Open the Comment Bank from the toolbar to save and reuse frequently used phrases. Comments are stored on Supabase and are accessible from any device.
10
Track your whole cohort in the Markbook
Click Markbook at the top of the page to see all candidates' marks at a glance. Switch between R094, Optional and Overall tabs. Use Actions to export CSV, PDF, a backup, upload scores in bulk, or print candidate summaries. The Overall tab shows predicted qualification grades with exam UMS targets.

How to use the Markbook
Track and export marks for your whole cohort
1
Marks are saved automatically
Each time a candidate is marked and saved, their marks, comments and page references are stored via Supabase — accessible from any device, no manual saving needed.
2
Navigate the markbook
Use the R094, Optional and Overall tabs to switch views. All Actions (export, upload, print) apply to whichever tab is active. The Overall tab combines both units to show predicted qualification grades.
3
Sort, filter and analyse
Use the Sort by buttons to order by name, total mark or date. Use the Class dropdown to filter by teaching group. Click Grade Analysis to see a grade distribution breakdown. Marks are colour-coded — yellow MB1, blue MB2, green MB3.
4
Upload scores in bulk
Use Actions > Upload Scores to import marks from a CSV or Excel file. Download the template first for the correct column layout. Names in Surname, Firstname format are automatically reversed and uppercased. Candidate numbers can be left blank and filled in later.
5
Overall grade predictions
The Overall tab shows each candidate's coursework UMS alongside columns for each qualification grade. Each cell shows the exam UMS still needed — hover it to see an estimated raw mark range based on recent exam grade boundaries.
6
Download mark sheets
Click URS next to any candidate to download their completed mark sheet. Tick candidates using the checkboxes and click Download Selected URS in the footer to get a ZIP of all selected sheets.
7
Select and remove candidates
Tick one or more candidates using the row checkboxes. A Remove Selected Students button appears in the footer — click it to delete those candidates after confirmation. Use the header checkbox to select all at once.
8
Notes and target grades
Click any Notes field to add a free-text note. Use the Target column to set a predicted or aspirational grade — useful for flagging borderline students ahead of moderation.
9
Export, backup and print
Open Actions to access all options: Download CSV for a spreadsheet, Print/PDF marks to print or save a PDF of selected candidates' marks, Export backup to save an encrypted file you can share or restore later, Import backup to restore from a file, and Print summaries for a printable A4 sheet of candidate summaries.
